Restock and Return to Theatre!
Singing, theatre, turkey legs and more!
AVAST!
A beautiful woman sometimes experiences Shenanigans, Tomfoolery, and General Horseplay but still manages to be in a community theatre production, and I think that's beautful :)
April was a month of unsettling realizations (how many items of clothing I own can be readily used for a pirate costume) and packing my days full of creative pursuits (painting, writing, acting + hooting and hollering), but somehow it doesn’t feel like a month can already have passed!
I’m excited to share all my updates with you.

Outside the Studio

This month’s Two Moons Cafe update includes postcards, unframed prints, and the new meat and cheese stickers I designed in March!
While I completely forgot to take a picture when I restocked, Witchlight is also restocked with stickers, buttons, framed prints, and has the last of my Crow and the Pitcher postcards.

Midnight Oil Updates

Leg? Finished.
First up: my turkey leg? Call that thing smoked to perfection. I love how it turned out! Shoutout to paper mache, craft paint, and a heat gun. I want to make more props this year!
As for me, remember how I was waiting on bated breath to see my costume (and find out if the makeup I had planned was going to be way too much in contrast)? In the first week of April, I got to meet up with the costume department-of-one at another local community theatre’s costume warehouse/workshop and raid the fantasy and mens’ uniform closets!

I ended up finding this one between a Disney’s Captain Hook jacket and a bunch of Naval jackets. This one is from a reenactment company in Boston! Not sure of what it originally went to, but together with the hat and belt I found at the warehouse and a shirt, pants, boots, and a feather from home, Uncle Charlie came together!
Which brings us once again to the topic of the makeup. Unbeknownst to me, the schedule for dress rehearsals/tech week had changed since we started, and as I’d been going off the printed schedule we’d originally gotten, I had full plans to arrive one day BEFORE dress rehearsal in full pirate drag.
Thankfully, I ran out of time and made it to that first rehearsal in only bare-bones contour. Despite the fact the next day was (for sure!) a full costume/makeup Dress Rehearsal, I was still nervous about showing up in my makeup for the first time, since no one had ever asked to approve it or see what I was thinking.

It ended up going over well!
I was also lucky enough to make some new friends within the cast!

Uncle Charlie (me!) and Harold (Emma Matteson), shared with permission.
This production was a little nerve-wracking, since I was as excited to get back on stage as I was nervous I wouldn’t remember how, but the performances would also be on the same stage I did my first musical on back in the day!
The middle school stage was used for most performances I did growing up. As a result, the costume room, backstage areas, and catwalk had such a magical sense to them for me. I was only ever there during a production or concert, with the liminal, special feeling of something good about to happen. It was nice to visit them again.

We wrapped up the last show on April 25th, and I’m happy to report that I’ve already done an audition in May! Fingers crossed that this won’t be my final bow, and that as nice as it was to visit an old haunt, it’ll be growing towards the sun from here!

Uncle Charlie, out!
In other news, I got a virtual audition sent for a musical I LOVE — if I get it, you’ll be the first to know. I was very happy with what I submitted this time!

I hear back from the in-person audition tomorrow morning, and the virtual this weekend. Here’s hoping!
Studio Updates
Like I mentioned last month, the new stickers arrived (yay!) but this time, I have proof!

These are now available at Witchlight and Two Moons Cafe. The glitter on these is non-shedding and gorgeous in the sunlight.
The commission I shared a snippet of is also coming along well — because it’s massive (think New Constellation: 16×20”!) it’s a steady climb rather than a run, full of textures and lighting that I am SO excited to share!
At the risk of adding even more to this newsletter, but I’ve gotta run and keep chipping away at said painting! Next month, I’ll be sharing my work in a new place, and hopefully showing off some new pieces! Thanks for sticking around.

I know that this month’s recap was very theatre-centric — thanks for listening to me yap all about all about it!
(And if seasonal allergies are coming for you, know that I’m in the trenches with too!)
More soon,
Alex :)
